Check the Windows setting

Windows 11 now has a setting for putting its taskbar at the top, with availability rolling out in stages.

  1. Open Windows Settings. Go to Personalization, Taskbar, Taskbar behaviors, then Taskbar position and choose Top if the setting is available.

This changes the taskbar's position. For the full steps, see moving the Windows 11 taskbar to the top. Glassline adds a menu bar that follows the app you are using.

Open Glassline

  1. Install Glassline from the Microsoft Store. Glassline needs Windows 11, version 22H2 or later.
  2. Open Glassline. The Windows taskbar and Start menu are hidden while it runs. The menu bar appears at the top and your apps sit in a dock at the bottom.

The design is Glassline's own, made for Windows 11, and Glassline has no connection to Apple.

Use the app menus

  1. Bring an app to the front. Its name appears at the top left of the menu bar.
  2. Click the app's name. An app with its own menu bar shows its menus here, such as File, Edit and View.
  3. Try another app. For an app without its own menu bar, Glassline provides App and Window menus. Window lets you minimize, maximize and switch between that app's windows.

App includes keeping the app in the dock and closing it. The name at the top changes as you switch apps, so you can see whose menus you are opening.

Choose the bar's icons

  1. Open Glassline Settings. Right-click the menu bar and choose Glassline Settings, then Menu Bar.
  2. Choose what stays visible. Use Weather, Wi-Fi, Sound, Battery and Notification bell to choose the icons in the bar.
  3. Set the clock. Show the date, Show the day of the week and Use a 24-hour clock change how it reads.

Click the clock to open your calendar. To add icons from your apps, follow pinning tray icons to the menu bar.

Match the window's colour

  1. Open Appearance in Glassline Settings. Turn on Match the maximized window's colour.
  2. Maximize an app window. The menu bar takes the window's colour, so the app seems to reach the top edge of the screen.

Try it right now

The home page is a working Glassline. Move over its dock, click its menu bar, open Search and Control Center.
