How to move the taskbar to the top in Windows 11

Since the September 2026 update, Windows 11 can put the taskbar at the top of the screen again. The setting is in Settings, under Personalization, Taskbar. If you want the top of your screen to hold the menus of your apps as well, Glassline puts a menu bar there and moves your apps to a dock at the bottom.

Move the taskbar in Windows Settings

  1. Open Settings. Choose Personalization, then Taskbar.
  2. Open Taskbar behaviors.
  3. Find Taskbar position and choose Top. Left and Right are there too.

The setting comes with the September 2026 update for Windows 11 (KB5124008) or a later one. Microsoft turns new features on in stages, so a PC that is fully up to date can still be waiting for it. Check Windows Update and look again in a few days.

What moves is the taskbar as you know it: the Start button, your app icons and the clock, now along the top edge. The menus of your apps stay inside their windows.

Put a menu bar at the top with Glassline

  1. Install Glassline from the Microsoft Store. It needs Windows 11, version 22H2 or later, so it works on PCs that do not have the new setting yet.
  2. Open it. The taskbar and the Start menu step aside. A menu bar appears along the top of the screen and a dock along the bottom. There is nothing to set up.
  3. Look at the top of the screen. On the left are the menus of the app in front: File, Edit, View and the rest. On the right are Wi-Fi, sound, the battery, the weather and the clock. When you maximize a window the bar takes its colour, so the two read as one.
  4. Click the clock. Control Center opens with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, brightness and the volume of each app, and next to it your calendar and notifications.

Choose what the bar shows

Right-click any icon in the bar and choose Move to Control Center to take it out of the bar, or right-click an empty part of the bar to bring one back. In Glassline Settings, under Menu Bar, you choose how the clock reads and whether each display gets its own bar.

Where your apps go

The apps you had on the taskbar live in the dock at the bottom. A dot marks the ones that are running, and a count shows unread notifications. Drag icons into any order, and drop in an app from Search to keep it. To open anything else, press the Windows key and type its name.

Getting the taskbar back

Right-click the menu bar and choose Quit Glassline. The Windows taskbar and Start menu come back exactly as they were, and they do the same if you uninstall.

Try it right now

The home page is a working Glassline. Move over its dock, click its menu bar, open Search and Control Center.
